The Set:
A tiered bandstand upstage center for seven musicians and an area for solo singers - all elevated. On SR and SL of Bandstand are exists and tables with two chairs on each side. DS are a microphone stand with 1930's shaped microphone for Act I. Act II changes with time, late 40's to the present.
The Characters:
The central character Johnny Logo, is a dancer/singer born in 1919. When we first see him in Act I, 1938-1941, he is a fanatical dancer/singer/photographer who wants to record the phenomenon of swing as it evolves. In ACT II, 1947 to present, Johnny changes with the times, scene to scene.
Show Synopsis:
Follow the character of Johnny Logo as he retells the story of Swing over the years. Swing! Swing! Swing! ...the dance, music, style and story moves in and out of fashion from the early years with songs like Louis Armstrong's "Heebie Jeebies" and Duke Ellington's "It Don't Mean A Thing (if it ain't got that swing)" all the way to today's extraordinary popular neo-swing, such as "Zoot Suit Riot" by the Cherry Poppin' Daddies and Lou Bega's "Mambo Number 5"...
Louis Armstrong, the great jazz musician is usually credited with being the founder of Swing. Armstrong's hot jazz licks and innovative phrasing melded into the Big Band sound pioneered by Fletcher Henderson in the late 1920's. By 1935, Swing had become a national craze with the huge success of the Benny Goodman orchestra and the hordes of hot swing Bands that followed....
